Deanna James (formerly Deanna Smith) is a Texas-based fine artist and internationally recognized tattooer known for pioneering a painterly approach to tattooing that has influenced the industry today. Her work, often described as a fusion of classical oil painting and modern tattoo artistry, is celebrated for its depth, emotional resonance, and technical innovation.

Raised in Texas, James developed a love for drawing and painting at a young age, gravitating toward portraiture and the human figure. She went on to formally study fine art at Booker T. Washington in Dallas, Texas. After school, James brought her classical training into the world of tattooing, where she cultivated her own distinctive “oil-painterly” style. Through years of research and experimentation, she developed a unique tattoo technique that translates the layering, glazing, and brushwork principles of painting directly onto skin.

This breakthrough approach has since gained recognition across the tattoo community, solidifying her reputation as both an innovator and an educator. The past few years she has taken workshop courses at the Florence Academy of Art and Charles Cecile’s Studio in Florence, Italy receiving an education that emphasized the techniques of the Old Masters.

This academic foundation (rooted in disciplines like chiaroscuro, sight-size drawing, and underpainting) became the backbone of her tattoo practice today. Beyond her artistic contributions, James is also deeply committed to using her skills to serve others.

She offers free nipple tattoos to women who have undergone mastectomies due to breast cancer, helping survivors reclaim their confidence and feel whole again.

For many clients, her work is not just about aesthetics but about healing, empowerment, and rewriting their relationship with their bodies.

Today, Deanna James continues to push the boundaries of tattooing as fine art, teaching seminars, presenting at international conventions, and inspiring both artists and collectors worldwide.

Her painterly tattoo style (rooted in classical traditions but entirely modern in application) stands as a testament to her belief that tattooing is not just craft, but a living, evolving art form.
